There's a bunch of things it does. There's special-cases for some common mistakes. There's also things like: When the parser expects a certain token, and it doesn't match then it will tag a diagnostic, and then continue on as normal.

Another is creating dummy AST nodes when an invalid token was found at certain positions. At the end all the diagnostics are grouped to a max one per line to prevent noise.
