I almost never travel with a checked-in luggage. Coming to the airport up to ~40 min earlier than usual (with just online checkin) and then having to wait at the carousel on the other side is just not worth it for 2-3 day trips.
How late do you get to the airport? My buffer always makes me arrive within the checked baggage time. I'd you have airline status than you can check baggage even later, and its first out. Also dont have to sacrifice on toiletries etc.

I'll be the last to argue with you over how you should travel, but damn - 10 minutes at the carousel?! That seems above-average by a fair amount.

Depends on where you're travelling, and how long you have to spend going through customs.

For me it's more about leaving. I want to get off that plane and on my way home asap. I'm never lucky with checked in luggage*. I generally just don't even want to wait for it * Personal bias, I'm sure I do average but it's only the negative experiences that stick in your memory

Doesn't really feel like a sacrifice - I can necessities in the hand luggage, and everything else can be found at the hotel. I prefer to spend as little time in airport as possible, so for EU flights usually arriving ~1 hour before departure (at least when travelling alone).

Also most airlines I'm flying for short-hauls have cheaper options for hand luggage only, so, on top of having to spend more time, it makes it even less worth it.
