There are a ton of startups that survive big company entrance into their markets. npm might not survive, but the reason will be mismanagement, not merely competition.
Hard to see how npm inc make it out of this though. Microsoft have so much capital. They're capitalizing on the wider GitHub ecosystem that npm can't possibly compete with.

That's probably true. On the other hand, it was hard to see how
