I wonder what npm inc could have done to make themselves a more likely candidate for acquisition? Open sourcing more of their code? Investing more in security features that companies wanr? Something else?

They don't have that many customers. That's why the new CEO was put in

yeah I think this is the best answer. their free stuff is super popular but that isn’t worth much if it doesn’t tie into anything that costs money

Has GitHub *ever* acquired rather than reinventing? ZenHub, Travis, that PR review extension I've already forgotten the name of... I dunno if it's NIH or cost-saving, but GitHub doesn't seem view acquisition as a growth strategy when stealing ideas is so much cheaper

I think brand equity plays a role. Why buy a company that is widely disliked for the way they’ve handled so many decisions over time, when you could instead cash in on that deficit by competing. (Especially since GitHub is widely liked.)

But GitHub also gets the best of both worlds because the package managers are all still maintained as OSS. While they get to focus on the money-making service pieces only.

Any GitHub Enterprise customer is surely using several of those package registries already, so perhaps it's just increasing the value of GH to the same customers by integrating and consolidating services.

Seeing that Microsoft has had enterprise js package hosting in Azure DevOps for quite a while, I guess they decided to build on that for github?

I think the biggest reason is they have access to hardware and teams that make it easier to scale to the volume they'll be receiving. And on top of that, it was probably cheaper than buying out npm.
