GitHub could have easily acquiresd npm inc. The GitHub package registry is designed to basically steal all their enterprise customers eventually. They saw it easier to build it themselves, and their customer base from scratch.

why is the question past tense? they haven’t gone bankrupt and could still get acquired sometime. there just needs to be some synergy with an actually profitable business

I was referring specifically to GitHub, which I clarify in my follow-up tweet

npm could have done a better job building up "shadow it" in the enterprise sector. They could have given 3-6 private packages which would have found usage and value in enterprise silos, startups and agencies.

I think the answer is more simple: they want to be an independent organization that’s focused on the community. Being acquired means they need to cater to a corporate overlord Of course now they’ve disrespected the community while GitHub is proving that they are community-driven

Been open to it? My guess is people offered to acquire them many times in the past and they said no.

Having a story behind their pay for product. My experience with npm Inc was that they had a lot of trouble justifying why you'd pay for their product or describing who their target audience was.
