What value is there for a syntax error to include the term "token" in it's message? Is there an expectation that users are familiar with parsing concepts? Seems pretty ridiculous.

I do not think having different error modes for beginners and “experts” is helpful. You can design error messages to be useful for both. There’s also a level of hubris assuming that “advanced terminology” is somehow more useful in decoding errors, it’s not.

Just my two cents, but: I consider myself a JS expert and I rarely read error messages anymore. At most, the linter in my editor underlines stuff and I instantly know what's wrong.
