What value is there for a syntax error to include the term "token" in it's message? Is there an expectation that users are familiar with parsing concepts? Seems pretty ridiculous.

you should send some patches for https://github.com/v8/v8/blob/master/src/message-template.h … to try and improve them :)
I wonder how many people are relying on V8 returning specific error messages

They have changed a lot over time, so hopefully not that much. The team has typically (that I’ve seen) accepted error message improvements
