I hope they would do the right thing and move the registry to the Foundation.

Honest question: Would you trust the Foundation to manage the registry at this point? Who has the time and energy to do this who isn't already on the verge of burnout?

Foundation can hire staff. This should be something run by people. It’d be a great use of money to. “Contribute money to running the registry” - it’s more similar to how Wikipedia runs, and I always donate there.

umn... no. there’s a long history of open source projects trying to pay for this sort of thing and the majority of that history is negative. i’d take the node.js project and the build wg/infra and inspiration.

Nope. Take a look how folks rebuild PyPI.

Nothing against Python, but we’re talking about several order of magnitude difference. By the last time I measured, 4x as many packages, 12x versions, and dep graphs 5 orders of magnitude larger which translates into thousands of times more downloads.

IMHO, those technical difficulties don’t matter much if the community really wants another solution. Take a look at PyPI sponsors and see how they help the project. https://pypi.org/sponsors/ 

The community is more than 10 Million developers. I don’t think this particular thread captures a representative sample. Migrating yourself and migrating an ecosystem of millions of developers is very different.
