If the npm registry disappeared. How quickly could it be rebuilt? (Without the cooperation of npm inc). Is anyone still mirroring the registry? The migration away from couchdb and the registry software being closed source would make it difficult.

The problem are not the modules. The problem are the user credentials and permission to publish a given module. No one can replicate those, as they are private. 😔

true, but not having those for a while won't destroy millions of dollars. That can be mitigated over time.

It will easily burn million of dollars over time. Because no more security updates, no more anything. However it’s something that we could work with - true.

Here's an interesting question, what would the fallout be if npm, inc just straight up went mental and blocked the registry? Would companies such as Microsoft who have deeper legal pockets have a case against them for disruption, or what would happen?

I don’t think you’re going to get an answer for if any large tech co would step up, but I can guarantee you that employees of those large tech cos would.

I hope they would do the right thing and move the registry to the Foundation.

Do we even know if that's an option? The founders may have been diluted, and the assets could be owned by the investors in the result of a closure. Will they be good stewards? Would they want to sell it off to earn back loss investment?

If somebody buys npm, they would have all interests in keep the registry running. The Foundation is the natural destination. I would love to see the npm cli getting in there too (asap).
