Running a company is very hard and all I can say is that I'm trying my best and have always treated people fairly, which is not the same as being nice.

The company has to remain solvent any employees to stay employed. These things are connected. I don't know enough about the details to weigh in on this case specifically, but hard choices are hard, and once you've been responsible for this sort of thing your perspective changes.
Yeah that makes sense. I'm not debating whether any particular decision was justified or not, I obviously have zero context. I just feel like this was "too soon" since it seems to brush off any criticism.

Not only that, but it really just doesn't seem fair to lay someone off one month before their cliff and not give them the options as part of their severance package. If that would be enough to push the company to bankruptcy then maybe the company deserves it.

Basically every VC-backed company plays games with stock that you wouldn't have guessed would be legal let alone ethical when starting as a technical employee. The first thing to realize is that if you trade compensation for stock you're getting played.
