I was crying in my car, a defeated retail finance sales guy who was failing pretty hard that quarter. I put on some weezer, pumped myself up and said "I'm gonna just go knock on the doors of that strip mall over there, see if I can sell them some corporate life insurance"https://twitter.com/ParissAthena/status/1111407796434534400 …

So I did. Everybody was like "get outta here". Except one company took me up on my offer to buy them lunch to discuss a buy-sell insurance policy on their 6 partners (seems crazy to have 6 partners now to me... but anyway)

We went to a place called Wingers. Burgers, wings, etc. They showed up with 3 partners and 2 of their spouses (?!). We talked then the bill came. I told them I'd pay before but did not expect that many people. I remember the numbers. $135 tab. I had $140 in the bank. I paid it

Came home and told my wife "well, I just spent our last dollar on lunch". IT SUUUUUUUCKED Anyway, they liked me. Fast forward a month or two and we closed the deal. It was a $4k paycheck for me. Biggest of my life, blew my mind recent-college-graduate mind.

One of the partners (he was CEO too) calls me up "did you get your commission yet?" "Yes, thank you!" "Great, I want to hire you onto our sales team" So a month later I was working for a software company.

I was REALLY into the software. So much so that I'd make all sorts of designs and the engineers would say "no" to pretty much all of it "too hard", "can't do that on the web".

Started the product team w/ me and the CEO and a couple other people ... and I learned some JavaScript and took them prototypes instead. "That's cool, but you can't do that on the web" "This *is* the web" "
"
Pretty soon they were asking me JavaScript questions.2 replies 7 retweets 262 likesShow this thread -

And it's crazy to look back and think that it all started with this dork crying in his Toyota Corolla, then pumping himself up to Weezer "Beverly Hills", and literally soliciting business in a strip mall in the middle nowhere to buy life insurance
