That's mostly a product of TurboTax lobbying with millions of dollars to ensure the process stays difficult and you need them That being said, I worked for a municipality and was astonished how little the departments shared information or data. Complete silos.

I find the TurboTax conspiracy to be unconvincing since this is how it’s been in the US for decades before.
