If the architecture is shit, then I'd press to improve it. If there's features missing, I'd aim to add them. If the community is a priori opposed to either of those, then yeah, go make your own, better version, and don't feel bad for even a moment.
I’ll speak pretty directly because I’m getting sick of speaking in code. I’m working on a toolchain that replaces a bunch of stuff. Babel would have to change everything in order to conform to an immutable architecture, at that point it’s less friction to create a new project.
based on historical patterns, I wouldn't worry and would put my faith in the community coming together (eventually) take for example, JSHint & JSCS, Node.js & io.js, and many more similar examples keep the faith and the dialogue open and eventually it will come together.
I think replacing Babel root and stem would be fantastic, for a number of reasons. Henry's done an amazing job, but from everything I've heard, the tech debt there is just too immense. And yeah - anyone who's a full time maintainer of Babel will be just fine.
