When a project has full-time maintainers that are community-sponsored is it unethical to compete if it means they could be out of a job? How do you quantify a projects value if it could have a negative effect on people’s lives? Utilitarianism? This isn’t targeted or a subtweet.

Nice try. It’s more like: charity pays for someone to give out free hot dogs, then a rich guy opens his own hot dog stand giving out free hot dogs. Hot dogs are the the same. One person is out of a paid job and the rich guy continues the same as before.

Why would people switch hot dog vendors if the quality was equivalent? I thought your question was about innovation in open source, not stagnation. Let the best dog win, regardless of the vendor's personal financial situation!
