When a project has full-time maintainers that are community-sponsored is it unethical to compete if it means they could be out of a job? How do you quantify a projects value if it could have a negative effect on people’s lives? Utilitarianism? This isn’t targeted or a subtweet.

I’m trying not to speak in absolutes, this would not stop me from releasing anything. I just think it’s important to acknowledge privilege and the effects it has on the broader ecosystem that may not be warranted.

I think it comes down to the reason to exist in the first place - e.g. is there a need? would collaboration work better? who are your users?
