When a project has full-time maintainers that are community-sponsored is it unethical to compete if it means they could be out of a job? How do you quantify a projects value if it could have a negative effect on people’s lives? Utilitarianism? This isn’t targeted or a subtweet.

Yeah, given your position (to use you as an example) it is a form of nepotism on a large scale. And nepotism is generally viewed as unethical.

Aren't they in a position of "privilege" with network effect (users, contributors, lock in) and funding? You releasing a new lib doesn't kill theirs, they can compete, collaborate, and/or contribute to yours.
