This question is essentially “is capitalism ethical?” but in this case if an effort was made to collaborate it seems like less of a grey area to me.
if the architecture and philosophy are incompatible, maybe offering an alternative would actualy do good ?
At that point I think it’s totally reasonable to pursue your alternative. It’s a conversation worth having with that project’s team and users though. “We are considering developing an alternative with X features for Y reasons.”
