Any alternative to TypeScript needs to support .d.ts as the canonical format for typing dependencies. Basically impossible to build any significant momentum without it.

I agree. But do you envision a TypeScript alternative to take a different tack on typing (eg nominal vs structural), or just leverage typings but be a different language (like some sort of TypedCoffeeScript)?

Could do either. I don't think the types need to be 100% lossless, they should just represent the closest equivalent in the alt type system. As long as they're consistent then it seems fine.
