Not sure if this is a subtweet of my article or not, but the takeaway shouldn't be for people: "don't get a degree", rather if you're not going to get one, here's one way to teach yourself. I kinda think you need to keep teaching yourself even with a degree

-
It's not! My reaction was purely from the tweet I quoted. Your article was great and well-needed. I feel like there was an even stronger narrative before though from some privileged-folk.

You can show experience. E.g. for a 5 year college degree you can provide the evidence of 10 years of relevant work experience
-
It's actually 3 years work experience to 1 year of education, and for visas like the H1B they require a degree with a minimum of 4 years. Which means it's actually 12 years required work experience which rules out anyone under 30.

Luck is a surprisingly (and frustratingly) significant factor of obtaining a work visa in US. Most options heavily if not mostly depend on a lottery system. (Speaking as an H1B holder that happened to get lucky)
-
Fortunately for my case the luck was my project becoming so popular that it satisfied the visa criteria

Yeah I always tell Aussies get yourself that degree if you have any inclination to work in the USA

The E3 visa is amazing. Facebook have gotten a lot of great front end engineers that way.
