I've found that I have more luck actually even receiving the item at all with the standard two-day delivery than the next-day. The next-day couriers are Amazon ones and the two-day goes through USPS. The Amazon ones tend to lose the package or leave on doorstep.

That used to be my experience when I was living in an apartment. Amazon couriers didn't seem to know how to get into the building leaving a lot of packages misdelivered. Since moving into a house though it's been awesome since we can reliably get deliveries now.
