I'd probably make more money if I only focused on education instead of also working on open source. But I can't help but build real stuff. Demos and hypothetical stuff doesn't scratch all my itches, and doesn't reveal the hairy stuff you have to deal with in the real world.
Working on open source also drives your education customers by giving you additional visibility. Similar approach to FB open source, it drives recruiting (simplified), even though that engineer could be more effective to the core business.
Oh yeah, it's totally marketing as well, but I don't think that's my motivation.
