Regardless of how much you may love Apple, why would you want to deliberately lock your app into a single ecosystem?

Notice that you are presuming they are making this choice out of love, not because it's good business sense for them. Why not be charitable and presume that they have solid business reasons for this?

Both. I understand the technical constraints. I thought their app was just Electron but I just inspected the .app and it uses a bunch of native cocoa and Swift stuff so that's more understandable. Maybe they have some cross platform abstractions inside of it that I can't see.
