I feel like forums had way more ways to express yourself than modern social media. Customizing your signature banner, user title, custom emoticons, and more. Felt a whole lot more personable than Twitter with only a display name and small profile pic.

Totally agree, and they weren't all homogeneous looks and features. I got my start in dev hacking forum software and I made phpBB 1.0's smiley pack

100%. A lot of stuff has moved to FB but it's a poor replacement IMO. UI is nowhere near as well suited to discussion and real name requirement probably puts people off. That said, there are some great specialist forums out there using Discourse, it's really well done software.

I think about this all of the time. Ran an early phpbb 2 forum with 60k+ members. Was great.
