I remember spending ages designing a signature in photoshop with a very long gif inset. Sorry dialup folks

Totally agree, and they weren't all homogeneous looks and features. I got my start in dev hacking forum software and I made phpBB 1.0's smiley pack

You woulda loved myspace! Or any of the “avenues”, xanga, or anything they let you add html and css into a small box for customizing your page!

A hugeeeee problem with phpbb was how much power admins had. It’s a long story but it’s how I got ohhoe as a handle

100%. A lot of stuff has moved to FB but it's a poor replacement IMO. UI is nowhere near as well suited to discussion and real name requirement probably puts people off. That said, there are some great specialist forums out there using Discourse, it's really well done software.

Custom signatures, user titles and custom emoticons where the things I absolutely hated about forums.

That being said, I recently joined http://thestartupbook.club - a discourse forum and man, this is so much nicer than the usual social media

I think about this all of the time. Ran an early phpbb 2 forum with 60k+ members. Was great.
