I feel like forums had way more ways to express yourself than modern social media. Customizing your signature banner, user title, custom emoticons, and more. Felt a whole lot more personable than Twitter with only a display name and small profile pic.

Discourse and NodeBB are quite modern and nice. I use a few Discourse forums.
