Isn’t it interesting that the two companies most influencing the web are the ones that own the very platforms we hope the web will liberate us from? It sure is convenient to be able to control the opposition.https://twitter.com/jlongster/status/1088567186468290562 …

I'm willing to understand that companies are big, different people working on different things, etc. but at some point you do have to wonder how we ended up here. The politics going on here is probably more than we can imagine.

I believe that none of this is evil or wrong. These are just individuals responding to incentives put in front of them by consumers and shareholders, then managers. I would expect an org to deprioritize anything that could cannibalize core business. Just something to be aware of.

It’s just nice to remember that while these companies make awesome contributions to the web (thank you, seriously), we can’t count on them alone to make the web *truly win*. Committees thankfully pull in a lot of other voices and companies. Also we need Mozilla.

Agreed. Scary though because companies like Mozilla have been on a downward trend for a while

I think they have enough, but certainly diversification of income helps. I think bolder leadership would help a lot, knowing people inside there’s a lot of dissonance. Some of it is self-inflicted
