Didn't see anything about this in https://blog.github.com/2019-01-07-new-year-new-github/ … So I guess now being a paid user is a badge of honor now? @GitHub Is there a way to disable this?

Good news about this change is that now it's really easy to write crawler to get the current amount of paid GitHub members. You can then use that to calculate revenue from paid users. You could then run the same crawler in a few days to see how many people actually downgrade.
