I've been using
@ProtonMail for years now with no issues and recommend it massively. I've never heard anything bad said about it. What makes you think it seems shady or dodgy?
Website looks really amateurish and I've heard the web/mobile apps are really slow. Also the emphasis on encryption seems facetious, client-side encryption is fine but they still need to receive your email in plain text to be processed somewhere.

I'm not an email poweruser, but I have never thought of it being slow. I only have experience with the web and android clients though, so its possible the iOS one isn't as good. I also think the website is fine, it gets the job done. 1/3

ProtonMail offers a free account tier if you didn't already know, so you could create an free account and play around on it to see if the experience is good enough for your needs. 2/3
