When I joined Microsoft I was inexplicably assigned the username `brterlso` rather than `bterlson`. Very annoying, but changing it involves much work, downtime, and friction; so on the advice of management (@Johnmont) I am legally changing my name to Brt Erlso instead.

@johnmont knows more history but as far as I can tell getting hosed over by a horrible alias is a Microsoft tradition at this point

I don't have the whole history. When I joined (a long time ago in a building far far away) the email system (pre-Exchange) did have a hard 8-character limit. Office 365 is quite a bit more flexible. :)
