We'll see.. :) Hoping at least some improvements to JS boot-up time and UI jank are possible. GMail is interesting - generally a long-lived tab on desktop. Still a lot of code from the last rewrite powering it. How much do they care about cold vs warm cache loads etc.
I definitely don’t use gmail as a long lived tab. In fact, realtime updates are so slow, when I’m expecting an email I just refresh the page.

When I'm expecting an email I start mashing g - i continuously (go to inbox key shortcut) which triggers a server check for emails. Well, used to, now I'm on the bare HTML version
