Most people don’t know that most of npm’s software is closed source. You want to build a new backend or mirror the registry? Haha! Have fun buddy! You gotta pay for an enterprise license to do anything like that.

Reminder: npm inc regularly gloat that Yarn is irrelevant and shouldn't exist. Ironic to see subtweets complaining about me not wanting npm inc to exist.

Fair, but Facebook is hardly an underdog either. I like, use, and contributed to Yarn, but I don't think either yarn or npm can claim to be the underdog.

Facebook has a lot of influence in the global community and marketplace. As a software engineer at Facebook though, being employed by Facebook does give me the liberty to spend company time working on open source but I don’t think there’s much more.

Even though they are a monopoly they still only hire like 4 full-time engineers for maintaining the CLI, enterprise tool, and registry. I can't imagine why they don't hire more.

Haven't followed Yarn development that much, but were / are (sorry if that's already working that way) plans to deliver an independent infrastructure?
-
I'm not yarn, but I've worked on trying to do so. It's really hard to do properly since they've been removing replication functionality.
