The great developer shortage is turning into the great CTO shortage. I had 3 companies approach me this week about help with hiring a CTO. Are financial benefits of becoming a tech contractor upsetting the traditional career progression and creating a shortage at the top?

I think it will right itself. Big companies do try to pull the most talented contractors back into permanent employment by offering salaries more and more comparable to contracting. And good consulting is ultimately about getting on with people and the best work "turnaround".

Main appeal of contracting for me was being outside of company bullshit. Money helps, but it was not the main reason. The only contractors I know who went back to perm did so im the mistaken belief you need to be a permie to get a mortgage
