I'm really bewildered by the backlash against "As a father of daughters" etc. That's basically how I assumed everyone experienced empathy.

yeah but it *is* so gendered - you never get women saying "as a mother of sons/as a sister to men", men get to be humans in their own right

True, but I feel like part of it is recognition that men often don't treat sexual assault seriously, and this is meant to correct that.

Obviously bond with a child is on another level but it must cross people's mind that their female friends / partners etc face this stuff

This is a good point but otoh "as a father of daughters" isn't really about us. It is often imploring abusers to think about their actions.

I don't know if it's effective. There are men with mothers, sisters, daughters and wives that must know this and yet still abuse women.

Personally I'd like to ask Mr. Weinstein and others like him what their mothers would think of them.
