I think this isn't a fair way to look at things. Doing things that are fun, still beneficial but not entirely *neccesary* keeps devs sharp

Oh I didn't take it to be advocacy. I was just surprised I was in the minority. Generally push for quality to support goals of my employer.

e.g. in some startups it's "ship product or the startup dies" so spending lots of time on unnecessary things could be fatal for the company

I agree that it totally makes sense when a product is at a late stage and benefits to be had in trying things to see if they improve it.
