Confusing that drastic lockdowns were easier to implement than a simple mask mandate. My best guess is that with lockdown compliance was invisible, but masks require visible/public compliance, therefore triggers greater fear of appearing submissive. Maybe needs better marketing?

I don't think that's it. I think that mask-wearing is just taboo in western society. Perhaps it's because it makes people think of sickness and criminality? Or perhaps it's because it's just uncommon and people don't like appearing unfashionable?
