To me the intuitive ideal is to live in the country when young, have a home, and a workshop. Accumulate raw materials and tools and knowledge this way, learn through works and hands, try things. Have a place to make babies and give them the materials they need to create, too.

Yes that's why the city's disconnect/isolation through a through of suburbs is so painful. Both the city and the country become a more unhappy place. The only solution I can think of near term is to greatly improve small cities. But most try to get bigger by suburbanization(!!)

I just realised that also I'm quite lucky to be in a bougie part of the city! Prior to the lockdown this emulated aspects of country-side living. However, there's no reason that the things I like couldn't exist in a less dense place.
