“Emotional self-regulation” is a risky proposition. Much motivation to pursue grand projects comes from “petty” emotions e.g. anger, shame, proving others wrong, grandiose self-belief etc. Get rid of those & you may be more stable, but lose the motivation to do anything great.
The reverse is also true. If your emotions are too well-regulated and you are too happy life eventually feels boring and lacking meaning.

And at this point people sometimes reach out for grand projects in the hope of finding meaning in them. But this is a mistake, because you might be emotionally regulated against a grand project failing or succeeding a few years in, but five years later not so much.

Grand to me means potentially several years striving towards something. And risk means wrong moves that could destroy your living standards permanently, etc. I actually don't know people that can emotionally regulate over a decade that leads to ruin, etc. Kids think they can.
