where did the notion of squashing branches first gain traction? it's such incredibly poor use of git as a tool and I've no idea why it caught on, which makes me assume a thought leader with outsized influence simply told people to do it

Experts were manually rewriting their Git histories and then GitHub added squash merging, and this is more beginner friendly because now you only have to care about the title and description of the PR which can be edited via the GUI.
