I wonder what percentage of work is doing one of these? I think it'd be much more than expected. Everybody just assumes that everything they do has a positive resolution, even though many failures are actually inevitable.

That's the black-pill. The white-pill is pointing out that even though a particular problem might be unsolvable, there's often something you could do which would make it obsolete.
