💡Quick Daylight Savings tip: if you worked a late shift last night when the clocks rolled back & had to work an extra hour, make sure you check your paystub this week and get paid for it! Computers sometimes miss it. Make sure you get paid - don’t let your labor get stolen!

There is a rather stark difference between not being paid for your time, and being taxed on what you're paid for your time. I'm not sure why you are pretending these two things are equivalent.

To the worker, is there any practical difference between an employer that only pays them for 30-40% of their time, and being paid for all of their time but having a government that taxes them so that only 30-40% of their income remains?

Of course there is. Tax dollars pay for public benefits, including roads, schools, and of course unemployment benefits and so on.

As I said, this might be true, but on a personal level it will leave your family out of pocket in much the same way.https://twitter.com/sebinsua/status/1191162310867521536?s=21 …

I guess you could argue that the latter is better because that tax will pay for vital public services, but in terms of supporting your family they both will leave you with a similar income. And, in fact, it is far easier to get paid for your time, than it is to escape tax.

That’s like arguing that being held up and going shopping is the same because in both cases you end up with less money in your pocket. 🙄. Your pay rate is used for everything. And the real world benefits of the taxes you pay cannot be ignored.

Not following. How is paying your taxes like going shopping? Do you choose what you're purchasing, how much and when?

You're out of gas, you don't have a hell of a lot of options. But hey, you get gas in exchange for your money. Whereas if someone mugs you, you get nothing. You still end up with the same $ in your pocket. Point was that "same $ in your pocket" it a ridiculous baseline.

Paying tax is by objective criteria nothing like buying gas though. As I said: you don't choose how much to spend, you don't choose what you're buying, you don't choose when you're buying.

I agree that it's better than bring robbed and that hopefully the government aren't too corrupt and will use it relatively well. However my basic point that people that are supporting large families are better off if they can keep a large chunk of their income is true.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that it's complex, and that experientially having less money than expected feels bad no matter how you got there.

Personally I would prefer a wealth tax than income tax. A high income tax on its own ensures that nobody new becomes wealthy, and realistically this means the only wealthy people are 'old money' dynasties.
