Old React was simple and fun and “just JavaScript.” New React is more powerful and more correct and better all around—at the expense of becoming a weird magical meta-language on top of JavaScript.

Hooks are IMO a vindication of the template-based approach to building web UIs—an acknowledgement that JavaScript constructs alone are not enough to build fast, correct, large-scale UIs.

Extremely spicy take. However I do think that modeling everything with JavaScript made them avoid pitfalls of templates (e.g. new syntax, way more rules, compilation steps, etc.)

Imagine adding new syntax or helpers into a template language and then compare that to custom hooks. It is much lighter.
