It's something many men internalise. Caring for yourself is neither "petty" or "running from reality". Google "toxic masculinity self-care" if you don't think this is a well known problem.
My point is: it upsets me *personally* that he's acting like it is wrong in any way for him to take a time out, because this is not good for men or others around them. I agree that there was a lack of clarity and how that was troublesome. But there are other voices saying that.

Okay. Well your voice needs to say it too. Because what it looks like is you're not upset about what looked like white supremacy, but are upset about a white guy feeling bad about taking time for self care.
