Today someone asked me how you coach the "alpha geek/brilliant jerk" out of being that person. The answer ultimately boils down to two simple things: Have you really, truly, looked them in the eye and told them the problem? Do they want to change?
"Do they want to change" reads like you're trying to find any reason to kick them to the kerb. You have to put the same level of patient work into changing the communication style of a jerk, as you expect them to put into communicating with the people that annoy them.

Why? We’re not their psychologist. We need to have a professional relationship and they need to not have a negative impact on team morale. If that’s not possible then I say adios! There’s always another job where they can try again.

They have bills to pay. They might even have families. If you think firing people because you've hired them but don't know how to manage them is a respectable management style I don't know what to say. It's your duty to make a genuine attempt here.

You're reading things I didn't say to lecture me on things I know probably better than you do. It's rather tiresome to read! I'm sure you mean well but in the future you might ask yourself if you're overinterpreting.

I'm never said you're not better than most people at this and my words are for your followers who interpret what you're saying as allowing them to fire anybody as long as they've convinced themselves these people don't want to change.
