Twitter essentially treats likes and retweets the same, (they both show up in my feed uninvited) so why does it only let us mute retweets?

What is annoying me is that I'm constantly getting american politics in my feed (AOC, Trump, etc). I'm based in the UK. There are too many accounts involved, and I don't like to completely mute/block accounts unless they're specifically abusive. I wish I could mute politics.

It seems to happen because I follow people that follow these accounts, and these accounts are very popular so clearly I need to be informed of it all...

(It's a broken default experience imho.)
