🔮🧵 If you have a question about the future of React, ask it in this thread and I’ll try my best to answer! I can’t know the future but I have some idea of what we’re working on and why. No question is too simple!

You mentioned a "pass-through" api for quick view mutations under the condition that it won’t change structurally, could you give us any specifics how it might look like?

const now = useAnimation(isActive) Components that call it are opted into special traversal that happens every frame. That traversal calls render for these components but doesn’t allow tree changes beyond simple updates. Outside of animation loop “now” is NaN.

Clever! That means react-spring for instance could shed <animation.div> and just setState intermediate states, and React sets it without diffing? 😵 It would also make it effortlessly x-platform since we don't have to maintain targets as React knows how to apply view changes. 😅

Btw, useTransient() maybe? I could imagine this can be super useful any time you need to push data quickly to a view. Constraint solvers, event handling, fps tickers, game loops, etc.

Yeah I mean that’s just API sketch from @sebmarkbage five minute braindump a few months ago. Not actual API or name.

Maybe this issue for tracking: https://github.com/facebook/react/issues/10703#issuecomment-329413838 … I started working on what is now react-move in anticipation of this being possible (2+ years ago). Be nice to have this for data viz.
