When different conversation norms conflict, which norms will you support regarding public (e.g. Twitter, blog, or MSM) conversation?

An academic should use academic norms but perhaps when an angry non-academic speaks to them they might then attempt traditional society norms (since these are more inclusive of different norms).

academic: "lets attempt neutral inquiry" enlightenment: "we are all equally free to inquire" social justice: "we must make sure that any inquiry alienates power hierarchies by favouring autoethnography, etc" traditional society: "nice day outside isn't it?"

The social justice idea that "even if inquiry is neutral it often isn't evenly distributed because of power hierarchies" makes sense. But entirely disallowing inquiry unless you are a member of a particular group reduces the diversity of inquirers in an even more extreme manner.

Also, I can't see how misunderstanding a situation through incomplete inquiry would let anybody effectively redraw power distributions. Basically, I think "academic norms" are the best for knowledge alongside an understanding that some inquiries happen more than others.

I think "traditional society norms" of trying to affirm everybody and change the subject are important for reducing conflict. And I think it's important to balance neutrality of inquiry with levels of conflict.

Anyway, I enjoy your tweets because you're good at "carving nature at its joints" but probably every time you do this while causing disrespect to social justice types you are selecting your audience and therefore lessening the neutrality of your polls.
