Don’t mean to pile on — but genuinely curious if something can explain this sentiment in more detail. Those PHP+AJAX scripts would still work, right? Or is it more about shifting consumer expectations?pic.twitter.com/n4xVastMOd

I mean there’s nobody preventing you from running your own server and editing PHP with Vim in production via a tmux session, and sprinkling some $.ajax() calls here and there in the output. Nobody forbade that
But founders and early employees are worried about their future employability if the venture doesn't work out. A lot of companies will judge them harshly if they worked with PHP and JQuery.
Maybe the underlying problem is that the 'best-in-class' practices often don't scale down to 'easy to get up and running fast' practices. Or even if they have a tutorial, the defaults are bad so you can't get into a production ready state without a lot of complication.
Another problem is that almost every tool nowadays has a 'best practice' that you need to learn from the culture and its leaders. It's hard to ignore this, knowing that you would be judged by your peers for doing so. Or even potentially let go by the startup if it succeeds.
