For a long time I thought being a lady coder was probably a lot like being a male nurse. Then, one time I met a male nurse and asked him about it and he was like, "no, everyone just thinks I'm a doctor." :sadtrombone

I was at a bar and 2 young women told me they worked at a hospital. I asked if they were “nurses or something?” They got angry bcuz they were training to be drs. I only asked if they were nurses bcuz they had told me they were 23-26. I fked up bcuz I made an assumption on age :(

And I didn’t really consider that you can “work” at a hospital prior to becoming a doctor. I still feel bad about this gaff to this day. I didn’t make the assumption because they were women. Made it because they were very very young.

Do you think you would have said the same to young men?

I’m not trying to be accusatory, I’ve found myself doing similar things.

I think it's best to not ask this question at all. If you go the other way around and ask if they are doctors and they're not you might also make them feel sad for not being 'good enough'.

Why not just ask what they do there? It's not making guesses about what they do, and still carries on the conversation.

Yes. And also, that was my point!
