For a long time I thought being a lady coder was probably a lot like being a male nurse. Then, one time I met a male nurse and asked him about it and he was like, "no, everyone just thinks I'm a doctor." :sadtrombone

totally off topic now... i feel like if the end goal is to find out what someone does, then kindly ask what they do. like "hey do you work at a hospital? what do you do?" :) framing questions differently is an art in itself. i struggle with this often

I don't think asking women if they are doctors makes them feel bad. I did listen to an interview where patients don't want a male nurse. Which only bothered him if the doctor was male already. So it's not a man in the room, but a man who is a nurse that bothered them.

Surely you could just ask what they do as there are so many jobs in a hospital regardless of age? If I met a man and he said he worked for an airline, I wouldn't assume he was a pilot for example.
