the wackiest thing is when I meet people under, say, 55 who proudly self-describe as capitalists.
Depends what Capitalist means to you I guess. Being given free stuff for just living might be cool but I'm happy to exchange my services for money. Less into the capitalism which relates to owning land or the means of production and forcing others to pay massive rent to use it.

You're equating commerce with capitalism

Perhaps a capitalist is somebody that doesn't disambiguate between capitalism and commerce because they feel that both rely on an individual's own choice to work and trade for profit. I know that I tend to see capitalism as a result of commerce. It cannot occur without commerce.
