My son is very much into King Kong vs. Godzilla these days… How many six-year-olds claim the 1962 film as their favorite movie in 2022?

Let’s hope mining profitability never recovers. GPUs still aren’t quite where they should be (subjective), and yes it’s worth waiting for sub-MSRP prices. DO NOT buy if the price isn’t right. Consumers have leverage now. Perhaps we should use it to force an end to the markups.

Josh may have forgotten to take a photo of this week’s burger, but I was able to digitally recreate its essence by harnessing the power of MSPaint. Naturally, this _masterpiece_ will soon be offered as an NFT.

This is a far cry from where we were a few years ago, but it is possible to build a $500 gaming PC in spring 2022. Well, assuming you don't need a case. (This is just attempt #1 to assemble something on Amazon.)

Grabbing drivers for an older external sound card, see a message about its reliance on Flash (of course) for the official software, ending with this: "To learn more on how to roll back your Windows system to support Adobe Flash Player content, please click here for more details."

Took a break from podcast editing today to try my hand at overclocking an RTX 3050. What a rewarding* experience. I pushed the (14 Gbps) memory all the way to 15 Gbps effective, maxed out the power limit, added to the factory core OC… and went from 83 FPS to 86 FPS. *lies

Multiple outlets reporting today on the rumor (based on…?) that a monolithic die could reach 1000 mm^2. I’ve listened to enough to know about reticle limits :)

The reticle limit is something around 33 x 26 mm = 858 mm². GA100 already is 826 mm². But starting with a number of 1,000 mm² could only lead to sensationalism. Btw: NVIDIA never got even close to use the full GA100 with 128 SMs. A100 Tensor Core GPU only uses 108 SMs. twitter.com/kopite7kimi/st…

Today in PC hardware: NFTs. It looks like I need to create yet another mail rule, and filter this sort of PR into the appropriate location.

Taking a short break this afternoon to check out this accumulated collection of demo CDs on an AMD K6-2 powered Compaq Presario 1270 laptop. This is the sort of thing that happens when cabinets and shelves reveal hoarded materials at every turn.

Clean install of Windows 11 this morning. Got NVIDIA drivers installed and within 2 seconds Windows Update overwrites them with an old version. Now I’m running DDU on a CLEAN INSTALL FROM AN HOUR AGO.

All this, and I was most upset that the fiber internet was severed. Also the power is out. Oh, and the car was partially crushed by the tree. And house damage. BUT MY GIGABIT INTERNET.

Criterion going UHD. I don’t want to re-buy anything BUT this might mean certain OOP Blu-rays get new releases (I hope)

We’re thrilled to announce that CITIZEN KANE will lead Criterion’s first slate of 4K Ultra HD releases along with MENACE II SOCIETY, THE PIANO, MULHOLLAND DR., THE RED SHOES, and A HARD DAY'S NIGHT! bit.ly/3xH9WCi

The best part of editing the podcast is cutting out some of my own inane commentary. The worst part is having to listen to myself ramble on incoherently in the process. At least there's less AC noise in the background now that I switched back to a PR40 mic.

Study BT specs & question why BT cans don't support lossless audio, but the vast majority are just on the old SBC codec. Apple uses AAC. aptX is ADPCM. Sony has LDAC (proprietary). Advantage of ALAC streaming to AirPods is ending lossy re-compression (now only has to happen once)

I finally put together a system with the (outstanding) SilverStone SUGO 15 case, and thus far I've used it on my living room floor to rip one CD using an external drive. Progress! (Review in the works.)

Performance uplift from simply updating to BIOS 0704 w/ ASUS MAXIMUS XIII HERO pretty significant. Boost behavior different; all-core frequency now 5.0GHz (PL off), up from 4.8GHz Examples of re-testing so far: • Blender Classroom render 16 sec faster • 17 FPS higher in DOTA 2
